Presque Isle Indoor Pool 84 Mechanic Street, Presque Isle, ME 04769 Phone: 764-2564 Lessons/Sessions (tentative) are held as follows: January – March (10 weeks) March-June (10 weeks) June- August (8 weeks) August- October (10 weeks) October – December (10 weeks) Lessons offered: (To see current schedule, click here.) Parent- Toddler and Infants (6 month to 3 year old) This is a water adjustment class for little ones. The goal is for children to have fun. We want children to enjoy being in the water. Parents are in the water with their children and water skills are introduced. Children will learn how to enter and exit the water, explore buoyancy in front and back position, change body position in water. Emphasis is on fun, safety, and gaining confidence and comfort in the water. Children are required to wear swim diapers. Class is 25 minutes. Three to five Year olds (non-swimming) for children 3 to 5 year olds They’ll enjoy a playful approach to learning water safety and swimming basics and building blocks of swimming such as bobbing, blow bubbles, kicking, reaching and pulling, swimming and floating. Parents are encouraged to watch from the pool bleachers. Class is 25 minutes. Swimming Three to Five Olds: Student must be able to swim 10 yards (unassisted) without flippers or bubble and fully submerge face in water. Emphasis on learning arm strokes front and back, putting face in the water, and diving skills. Class is 25 minutes. Learn to swim one: Must be 6-year years old or older Class is 40 minutes instruction and 10 minute free time. Students will learn to adjust to water, emphasis on learning arm strokes front and back, floating, blowing bubbles, kicking, and jumping in. Must be able to swim 15 yards unassisted to advance to level 2. Level II and III are combined Must be able to swim 15 yards unassisted. Class is 40 minutes instruction and 10 minutes of free time. Students will learn front and back floats and glide, flutter kick front and back, whip kick and dolphin kick, front and back crawl and elementary backstroke, how to dive and retrieve objects. Also swim underwater 15 yards and tread water. Safety skills, rhythmic breathing, survival floating, and swimming will also be learned. Level IV: stroke Development (Level IV –VI is combined) Student must have passed Level III. Class is 40 minutes instruction and 10 minutes of free time. Students will be able to perform the following skills: front crawl with rotary or rhythmic breathing, back crawl, elementary backstroke, butterfly and scissor kick, safety skills, diving and turns. Level V Must have passed Level IV. Class is 40 minutes instruction and 10 minute of free time Skills mastered: surface dives, safety skills, and refinement of butterfly and breast strokes, front and back crawl, backstroke, side stroke, and flip turns. Level VI Consists of 4 components (personal water safety, lifeguard readiness, fundamentals of diving and fitness swimming). Refines all six strokes. Class is 40 minutes of instruction and 10 minutes of free time. Swim Clinic This clinic will work on competitive strokes and techniques. Adult Beginner Adult will learn to adjust to water. Emphasis is on learning basic swimming skills and techniques such as floating, kicking, reaching and pulling. Class is 50 minutes. Adult Stroke Improvement Adults will learn to refine their strokes. Class is 50 minutes. Water Exercise Class Come join the fun and relaxing way to exercise. Kayaking Lessons Offered in the early spring usually Wednesday evening. Learn basic strokes, paddling skills and rolls. Guard Start Designed for youth ages 11 to 14. This course provides a foundation of lifeguarding and life skills. The focus is on 5 key areas: fitness and swimming skills, responses in an emergency, leadership skills, professionalism as a lifeguard. Lifeguard Training Must be able to swim 500 yards non stop using front crawl with rhythmic breathing and breaststroke and retrieve a 10 pound brick from the bottom of the deep end. Must be 15 years of age by the last day of class. Course is a 32-hour certificate program which trains people how to be an American Red Cross Lifeguard. You will be trained in a number of lifeguarding techniques, such as surveillance, using rescue equipment for distressed swimmers, active drowning victim and passive drowning victim. You’ll also learn how to care for someone who may have a head, neck, or back injury. Full attendance is mandatory. You will receive community first aid, professional CPR and lifeguarding certificates. Water Safety Instructor (WSI) WSI is a 36-hour class that trains candidates in American Red Cross methods of aquatic safety and instruction. Participants must be at least 16 years old by the last day of class. Swim prerequisites for this class are you must be able to swim all 6 strokes correctly.
