Commemorating the flight of the Double Eagle II, the first manned hot-air balloon to make a Trans-Atlantic crossing, this one-acre park is located at 140 Spragueville Road, west of the Echo Lake turnoff. The park was created on the exact site from which Ben Abruzzo, Maxie Anderson, and Larry Newman launched their balloon in 1978; the balloon landed in Miseray, France. The flight of the Double Eagle II has been a prominent exhibit at the Smithsonian Institute’s National Air and Space Museum.
Constructed through the efforts of the Spragueville Extension and the Merle Sprague family and donated to the City in 1981, the park consists of a replica of the balloon, a flagpole, plantings, and benches. The parking area can accommodate 10 vehicles.
